The Department of Applied Computer Science at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automatics, Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering is a place where a broad range of research and didactic works are performed. The scientific staff have unique experience related to the application of computer science in practice. The capital of knowledge and experience were collected in the course of many years' cooperation of the academicians on developing informatic systems and also perfecting their didactic skills, both in Poland and abroad. The staff of the Department are members of international and home organizations (AAAI, ACM, FIPA, IEEE, PTI, PAS, PSSI). Having such tutors and supervisors, the graduates of Applied Computer Science leave the University equipped with extensive knowledge and become one the most appreciated specialists in Poland.

The students are given opportunity to learn the newest technologies in specialist laboratories:

  • Imbedded systems: control systems, single computer systems, components of intelligent networks and buildings enabling realization of the Ambient Intelligence concept;

  • Computer networks and multimedia systems: diversified devices for multimedia data transmission and their programming, stereoscopic projectors including;

  • Mobile technologies: hardware and software by Apple (iOS, OS X) and Android solutions;

  • Computer graphics: creation and edition of 3D graphics and visualizations, equipped with, e.g. HD+ projector and 3D scanner.

The research works realized at the Department cover:

  • software engineering: theoretical aspects, related to the quality of software, and practical ones, related to modern software architectures (SOA);

  • processing of large sets of data: cloud computing, big data, data warehouses;

  • artificial intelligence: knowledge engineering, decision aiding, computer linguistics;

  • computer graphics: 3D graphics laboratory;

  • imbedded and mobile systems: microcontrollers, single computer systems, Android and iOS platforms;

  • Smart Grid: application of computer science for making an intelligent power infrastructure of the 21st century (the Department has unique in Poland competences in this respect);

  • managing informatic projects: agile and classic methods, feasibility study of their integrability .

The Department closely cooperates with State organizations and public administration, e.g. Office of the Małopolska Marshal, Energy Regulatory Office), and also with industry, e.g. GE, ABB, Schreder, Philips and Fideltronik. One of the joint projects is Green AGH Campus - a Smart City project, realized with the Office of the Marshal and GE. The Department coordinates the pilot Smart Grid solutions, in that intelligent lighting systems, and implements integrated laboratory of power systems for monitoring the efficiency of various types of green energy sources in the Małopolska Voivodeship.

The Department is involved in co-realization of projects financed by, e.g.:

  • Polish National Center for Research and Development

  • National Science Center - Poland

  • KIC InnoEnergy

  • Operational Programme 'Human Resources Development'

  • EU Framework Program

  • National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management

  • Voivodeship Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management

Four postgraduate studies are available at the Department:

  • Software engineering

  • Modern computer graphics

  • Managing informatic projects

  • Programming of web application

The following Student's Scientific Circles are associated with the Department:

  • SSC of Computer Games Creators 'Shader'

  • SSC MacKN

  • SSC of Artificial Intelligence 'NOESIS'

  • SSC Glider
